48 to 64 Units

16-17

*Optional courses: Must be approved by the Graduate Advisor. 16 Units per semester is required. You may take additional classes with the permission of the instructor.

Important Information:

  • All classes need to be taken for a letter grade (no P/NP or S/U).
  • You must be fully enrolled in all classes including your independent study no later than the 3rd week of the semester. This means choosing a mentor for first years (Art 290) and a MFA committee for second years (Art 295).

Satisfactory Progress in Graduate School

Graduate students must maintain a B- grade average to be considered in good standing by the University. Failure to do so results in automatic academic probation. Students may have a B- grade average and not be considered to be making satisfactory progress (not pass reviews) at the departmental level, which can also result in academic probationary status. GSI positions are awarded to students in good standing who have passed their reviews without reservation, and show potential for successful teaching.

Reviews

Your work is reviewed at the end of each semester by all permanent faculty members and some lecturers (those you have worked with) in your studio. The review is 45 minutes long and includes an open discussion of your work and your progress during the semester, in which you are expected to participate. Review schedules will be posted by the Student Affairs Officer as early in the semester as possible - usually within the first 2-3 weeks. Any special needs you may have for your review should be communicated to Dee as soon as possible so that we may schedule the reviews accordingly. You are responsible for locating and setting up any equipment you will need for your review such as video projectors, computers, etc. You may communicate with the front office about such equipment needs.

The procedure is as follows:

  • Submit written statement 2 weeks prior to review to Student Affairs Officer.
  • The faculty reviews the student's work as stated above.
  • Afterwards the faculty meets to discuss each student and assess their progress.
  • A vote is taken by each faculty member on the review committee whether to pass/fail the student.
  • Once all the votes are tallied the faculty graduate adviser reviews the votes and organizes a re-review and support in the case of a failing student.
  • The faculty graduate advisor then asks each student's faculty committee to submit a grade for Art 290/295.

Students are passed on the quality and demonstrated progress of their work. If the faculty does not support your research due to concerns of progress, engagement, or expertise, they can recommend a re-review or make recommendations for formal probation through the Dean of the Graduate Division. If a re-review is recommended, students will have a reasonable amount of time to re-present their work.
