Art Major Requirements
TO DECLARE THE ART PRACTICE MAJOR, STUDENTS MUST HAVE:
1. Completed R&C requirements
2. Completed 2 required studio courses: Art 8 and Art 12*
3. Completed 1 lower-division art history course*
ONLY AFTER student has met the three above stated requirements can they then submit their portfolio for declaring the major. The portfolio requires twelve images and a copy of the student's transcripts.
*student must have completed these courses with no less than a 3.3 GPA.
To complete the major, students must have completed 13 COURSES (5 lower-division and 8 upper-division)
LOWER DIVISION: Complete 4 studio classes and 1 art history course (total of 5 courses)
- REQUIRED:
- Art 8 - Intro to Visual Thinking
- Art 12 - The Language of Drawing
- CHOOSE 2 FROM:
- Art 13 - The Language of Painting (beg.)
- Art 14 - The Language of Sculpture (beg.)
- Art 16 - The Language of Printmaking (beg.)
- Art 23AC - Digital Media Foundations (beg.) or Art/Film 26 - The Moving Image
- IN ADDITION:
- One lower division Art History class: History of Art 10-84
UPPER DIVISION: Complete 6 upper division studios and 2 art history courses (total of 8 courses)
- REQUIRED:
- Art 117 - Drawing & Composition AND/OR
- Art 118 - Advanced Figure Drawing
- Art 119 - Global Perspectives in Contemporary Art (replaces 20th Century Art History topic)
- CHOOSE REMAINING 4 CLASSES FROM:
- Art 102 - Painting
- Art 120, 122, 123, 124 - Printmaking (Intaglio, Lithography, Silkscreen)
- Art 132, 137 - Approaches to Sculpture; Ceramics
- Art 133, 138 - Approaches to Sculpture: Meaning in Material, Installation
- Art 141, 142 - New Genres - Video and Performance
- Art 160 - Special Topics in Art
- Art 162 - Issues in Cultural Display: Studio & Post-Studio Practice
- Art 165 - Art, Medicine, Disability
- Art 171 OR Art 174 - Digital Video & Advanced Digital Video
- Art 173 - Sound Art

- OR: Substitute two studio-based classes from Theater, Dance and Performance Studies, Film, C.N.M., or Vis. Stds.
- IN ADDITION :
- In addition to the required Art 119 - Global Perspectives in Contemporary Art, the student must take 1additional upper division art history course. This other may be the students choice (breadth course). The student may choose from Film, Anthropology, Ethnic Stds., Architecture, CNM, etc.
- Complete Art 185 - Professional Practices/Senior Project (This counts as ONE of the 6 upper division requirements)
- 2 of the 6 studio classes may be substituted with the following visually oriented classes:
- Dramatic Art - 173A/B (Scene Design), 174A/B (Costume Design), 177 (Lighting Design)
- Visual Studies - 180 series (includes photography)
- Film Studies - 185, 187
- Declared majors may take Art 199 for units and P/NP
- Declared majors may take H195A/B for a grade and units
ALL STUDIO CLASSES IN THE MAJOR MUST BE TAKEN FOR A LETTER GRADE.
Of the three Art History classes, only one class can be taken for P/NP.
